One thing it requires, I would think, is real engagement with the ghosts, the literary voices, the contemporaries. For one, marketing it as a book that “defies genre” is simply a cover for what felt like a hodgepodge of totally miscellaneous writing diaries, articles on literature, some travelogues, some misc.

I hadn’t heard of it, but saw it won the Cervantes Prize, so I thought it would be an appropriate book to follow that read. I really wish i could have read some of this guys actual writings before i read his memoir, he’s obviously a very talented writer and this is a very good montage of his life of which parts of it are amazing, but as i only read english i am missing a whole bunch of his story, i don’t know his works at all!
