I had zero emotional investment in any of the one-dimensional characters. Diadem Michella, embroiled in the schemes of the ancient noble families on the decadent capital planet Sonjeera, is too distracted to recognize the danger Adolphus poses. With the planet Hellhole destined for doom on two fronts; one at the hand of the planet conquering Diadem, the other, a rogue faction of Ro-Xayans who want to destroy the planet to prevent the few surviving original Xayans and the newly converted human shadow-xayans from reaching ala-‘ru – a mysterious spiritualist transcendence which is revealed in the later stages of the bookGeneral Adolphus rallies the defense forces of the 52 planets that comprise the Deep Zone along with the telepathy skills of the Xayans to forge a last stand against both threats.


It reminded me of the last few books of Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Ingerno series that stretched two books into three using similar tactics. It makes for an interesting roller coaster of emotions which change as rapidly as the scenarios they are created within. General Tiber Adolphus struggles to protect his people from the vengeful Constellation fleet as well as the impending threat of the alien Hellhooe. Back on Sonjeera, the Monarchy is in an uproar after their surprising defeat and the breakaway of the Deep Zone planets.

However the constant revisiting the back story of almost every main character over and over again made for tedious reading until I finally gave up and hellhope skipping over those parts. We got the main plot points hammered out quickly enough, but the Hellhole trilogy has plenty of side stories and unexpected twists.


I was glad when Anderson and Herbert got the 3rd installment completed. I think I might imferno been nervous because the last book that I read by this duo, Mentats of Dunewas such a huge disaster. Can all these lives and the planet itself be saved? It kept the story fun and unpredictable. Pales in comparison to the Dune tales, but if one had never read any Dune, this would hold up pretty well as a science fiction trilogy. I don’t want to get too into details but a lot of people have bashed on the writers in the past.

It was a satisfying read. As I got into this one, I found the writing somewhat clunky, and I found it hard to get into some of the characters.

The ‘movie scene’ chapter style is engaging, keeping you turning the pages to see what is happening to the other characters on other planets.
